SBCCA Has Some of the Nicest People!

Late one Tuesday afternoon after a marathon session of pickleball, I was dozing off in my recliner when the phone rang. It was Dave and Toni Crosby calling from Des Moines, Iowa. Toni had discovered a fabulous bank that was being auctioned off the next day by Horst Auctioneers of Ephrata, Pennsylvania. The auction was not online and the house did not accept left bids. The sale started at 1:00. “It’s about a six hour drive from your house. You should go.” Toni said.

The bank was a pristine nickel plated “Boy with Large Football” manufactured by Hubley in 1914. Horst Auctioneers had just posted a picture of the front of the bank that morning on their website. The assumption was not a lot of collectors would even be aware of the listing. I had a few hours to make a decision.

I was concerned about making the long drive and coming home empty handed. What if the back of the bank was broken? What if Don Heim walked into the room? I knew driving up to Ephrata from my Virginia Beach home would put me right in the middle of the horrendous Washington, D.C. morning rush hour traffic. . .
