The Chalk & Vinyl Sleeping Santa Banks

Published in the December 2023 Penny Bank Post | Written by David Dods

In the book Coin Banks by Banthrico, authored by longtime SBCCA member Jim Redwine (deceased), there are two Sleeping Santa banks made of different materials than the two metal examples featured in a previous Penny Bank Post article. One bank is made of chalk, also referred to as “Banthrico Plaster,” and the other later version is made of vinyl.

The chalk design is shown as #106 in the Penny Bank Book by Andy and Susan Moore. Featured in Fig. 1, this bank is 7 1/8” tall with the slot in the back and the chair offered in assorted colors. The chalk design may have been the first Sleeping Santa bank produced by Banthrico circa 1948.

The vinyl version as shown in Fig 2 is about 5 3/4” tall and has a twist out plastic trap. This bank was probably produced in the 1970’s by another manufacturer for Banthrico.
